I found myself involved in a heated debate today as I was just discussing the Parisian holiday Vogue edition - http://www.vogue.fr/decembre-2010-01 . The thing is there is a photo session featuring these small girls in heavy make up and wearing fancy, sometimes evening kind of clothes. I, as a big Tom Ford fan, didn't really see anything wrong considering his usual approach. I would have never expected him to be superficial. Regular. On top of that, to me Vogue is not about printing art photos but has turned into an institution long time ago and I expect them to provoke me, apart from stuffing the magazine with more and more ads.
My point being that I really don't think this is just a fun promoting photo shoot. I may be very wrong but I think he achieves his goal provoking strong reactions - both positive and negative, although I don't really see how there would be strongly positive but who knows. What I see is bitterness. Serious faces, serious eyes. Misunderstanding. False world with false values. Illusion. Gain and loss. Loss and gain. Reality versus circus. But not pornography. I think he is just walking on the edge. As he very often does.
So, the debate seems to get too heated for my taste and I just decided to ask what you think if you have seen the photos. Tom Ford was invited as a guest editor, partially photographer, writer, etc. There is another very interesting photo session too - elder people passionately kissing and showing of their love, apparently having sex. No one thinks is disgusting, everyone says it's beautiful, Love on the grand scale, blah-blah, but behind their sunglasses they roll their eyes... And talk about moral at the same time. Yep, Ford got it - false world with false values.
